YAO BIAN JI / READING A MOTIF
Choosing a Meaningful Custom Porcelain Gift
Start with the person, not a rule about what a symbol must mean. A thoughtful gift brief explains the recipient’s taste, the occasion and the role the piece will have. The suggestions here are Yao Bian Ji editorial advice.

For a birthday: ask how they feel about longevity symbols.
Peach and pine-and-crane designs can start a conversation about traditional longevity wishes. A recipient who dislikes explicit age references may prefer another motif or a simple personal inscription.
Pine and crane · Bats and blessings · Peach of longevity · Butterfly
For a new home: choose a visual companion.
Compare peony, lotus or fish-and-lotus references with the colours and objects already in the home. Treat their cultural associations as an optional layer of meaning. Placement, use and the final form still need discussion.
For a celebration: avoid assuming a wish for children.
Pomegranate belongs to a historical fertility vocabulary in the cited museum record. Do not choose it by default for a wedding. Ask what the recipient welcomes; a butterfly reference, shared colours or a personal idea may be a better start.
For yourself: liking the design is enough.
You do not need an auspicious reason to choose a flower or animal. Explain which part you like: a repeat, a branch, an open area of white or the way the motif meets the form. A custom proposal should make those choices visible.
Before the design becomes an order
- Choose one or two references and explain what attracts you. A historical object is inspiration, not a promised reproduction.
- Specify form, quantity, budget and currency, intended use, destination and desired arrival date.
- Confirm the drawing, actual colours, included parts, suitability for the intended use, full quote, delivery and cancellation terms in writing before paying.
A motif does not establish food-contact safety, material, exact firing method or a delivery guarantee. The quoted piece must be checked for its actual intended use.
